New Programs for the ST!
Good games are proliferating on the Atari ST right now. We
have Populous, where the player can "play God" in a most literal
sense in over 500 scenarios! Populous has been out a while, so it
may not be "new" anymore, but the new Populous "sequel disk" lets
you move on to more intriguing worlds.... This one is from
Bullfrog U.K\Electronic Arts. $44.95 suggested list price.
Falcon 1.1 (update is $7.50)and Operation: Counterstrike
($24.95) are out. Air jockeys, gird your loins and prepare to
take on the MiG-29, now added to spruce up Operation:
Counterstrike, which is the "sequel" to Falcon. Kudos to Spectrum
Holobyte for getting this one out...
Spectrum Holobyte is also busy planning to release new games
for the ST. Current plans are Tank, an M-1 Abrams tank simulator,
'Vette, a Corvette driving simulation that is purported to
include fast 3-D updating and even pedestrians! More titles
should be forthcoming, and we will keep you updated.
Empire ][ is being advertised by some mail order merchants.
For those of you who loved Empire by Interphase, this one will be
a must have.
However, if you're not committed to Empire, you may want to
consider what many people consider the sequel of an ST original
military simulator "of extraordinary magnitude": Universal
Military Simulator 2. UMS ][ apparently offers new features, but
at press time I have no further info. Suggested list price is
unknown at this time.
Other games to look for: Xenon 2 (which is a suprisingly
good shoot 'em up that is pretty intriguing and has incredibly
smooth scrolling and great graphics), Gauntlet ][ (the Mindscape
USA version is out, but no apparent differences from the European
version by U.S. Gold), TV Sports Football (perhaps THE biggest
disappointment this year... CinemaWare has adopted a policy that
essentially claims the ST isn't worth a full port of TV Sports
Football from the Amiga, so you know where to put your money?
Everywhere BUT CinemaWare! [But the game play is still good and I
can't say it is that bad overall...]), Blood Money (another great
shoot 'em up with stunning graphics and sound), and others merit
attention as well, if for no reason than that they round out the
ST games market.
Speaking of which, DM ][ has still not been released yet, but
that may no longer be a problem. We will be calling FTL for our
next issue to get the low down on exactly what is happening since
the ill-fated release dates have passed by for DM ][: Chaos
Strikes Back!. The reason this isn't a problem for adventurers is
that Bloodwych, a 2 player DM-style game (looks so close, it is
hard to tell the two apart looking solely at dungeon graphics from
the screenshots and demo!) that adds a few new twists to the
original but is NOT DM ][ contrary to some earlier statements.
The ST of course isn't all fun 'n games. Programmers can
rejoice that GFA Compiler for GFA Basic 3.0 is finally out. Antic
should have it for sell at $49.95 suggested list price. Antic
also supports STOS Basic by Mandarin. STOS Basic has been out a
while but Mandarin has been releasing several packages that
support STOS Basic such as: STOS Compiler ($44.95), STOS Sprites
600 ($29.95), STOS Maestro (h/w sound sampler + s/w, all at $130).
It looks like with GFA, HiSoft and Mandarin competing, there will
be no shortage of good BASICs. And I almost forgot LDW Basic
(which doesn't seem to have a large USA following...)!
In terms of applications, ISD should have the Calamus O-Line
Art package ($250) and a few new fixes for Calamus by the EOY (End
of the Year), that make it equivalent to the rumoured "Calamus
Plus".
We also have out a few new telecommunications packages.
Intersect should have MasterLink available now, for about $75.
There is also rumoured to be a new telecomm package from Canada
for $30 that offers background terminal as well as file transfers,
all from a desk accessory! We'll keep you posted on that one as
well...
CodeHead, led by the prolific programming of Charles F.
Johnson (if you want to see skill, peruse the source code of one
of his many PD efforts!), has released the CodeHead Utilities
disk. One program, CodeCopy, is being used by us to duplicate
THIS very magazine! At $29.95, a bargain! Also, CodeHead has
updated MultiDesk to v1.8. Updates are (naturally!) available to
registered owners...
Finally, for the artist in you, Quantum Paint Delux/][ ($60)
should be making its way over here. It, like its predecessor is a
4096 color paint program for the ST utilizing a similar technique
to what the Amiga uses in interlaced. So yes, you do wind up with
that annoying flicker...
That's all for now, I'll be back in 60 days with a LOT more
info as 4th quarter releases fly hot and heavy in the USA!
